That’s why we consider it an optional part of nail prep rather than something everyone needs to use.
If your cuticle area is already clean and there’s no excess skin sitting on or hanging over the nail plate, there may be nothing to trim at all.
What is a cuticle nipper used for?
At GELCARE, we use the Cuticle Nipper to trim excess skin around the cuticle area when necessary.
The goal isn’t to remove as much as possible or create a perfectly bare cuticle line. You only want to remove skin that’s touching or hanging over the nail plate and could get in the way of your Gel Polish application.
Why does that matter? Gel applied over skin rather than directly onto a properly prepped nail plate can contribute to lifting.

Do you need to cut your cuticles?

Our usual prep starts with Cuticle Softener, followed by gently pushing back the cuticles with the arched end of the Gel Removal Tool. We then use the small bladed end in circular motions to help dislodge dry skin from the nail plate.
For many people, that may be all the cuticle prep you need.
The Cuticle Nipper comes in when there’s still excess skin touching or hanging over the nail plate and you feel comfortable trimming it.

How to use a cuticle nipper
If you do choose to use one, precision matters much more than speed.
1. Prep your cuticles first
Start by applying Cuticle Softener around the cuticle area. This helps soften dry skin and makes it easier to gently push the cuticles back.
Using the arched end of your Gel Removal Tool at approximately a 45-degree angle, gently push back the cuticle.
Next, use the small bladed end in gentle circular motions to dislodge dry skin from the nail plate. Reapply Cuticle Softener if needed.
2. Look before you trim
Before cutting anything, identify exactly what needs to be removed.
Only trim excess skin that’s touching or hanging over the nail plate. You don’t need to cut simply because you have a Cuticle Nipper in your hand.
Sometimes the correct amount to trim is none.
3. Keep the blades in sight
When using your Cuticle Nipper, always look between the blades so you can see exactly what you’re cutting.
Use the tip of the blades for greater precision and work gently around the cuticle area in one continuous motion.
There’s no need to rush or take large cuts.
4. Know when to stop
Once the excess skin is gone, you’re done.
Avoid continuing around the cuticle just for the sake of making everything look more trimmed. The goal is simply to create a clean nail plate for your manicure.
And if at any point you don’t feel comfortable? Stop. You can skip this step entirely.
Cuticle nipper vs. cuticle pusher: what’s the difference?
They may live beside each other in your manicure kit, but they have very different jobs.

A Cuticle Nipper, on the other hand, has sharp blades that physically trim excess skin.
We recommend starting with the gentler option. Push and clean first, then reach for the nipper only if there’s excess skin that actually needs trimming.
Can you do a gel manicure without a cuticle nipper?
Absolutely.
What matters for Gel Polish application is having a properly prepped nail plate with no skin interfering with where the gel needs to adhere.
That doesn’t automatically mean cutting your cuticles.
If Cuticle Softener and your Gel Removal Tool are enough to clean the nail plate, you can move right along with the rest of your prep.
Your manicure will not know that the Cuticle Nipper stayed in the drawer.
How to care for a cuticle nipper
